Tsai lauds democracy activist Fu

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate and party chairperson Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) lauded late democratic activist Fu Cheng’s (傅正) life-long contribution to Taiwan at a commemorative event held yesterday to mark the 20th anniversary of his death.

The commemoration took place at Taipei’s Grand Hotel — the site where he and other democracy activists founded the DPP in 1986.

“On Sept. 28, 1986, the DPP was formed at the Grand Hotel. Today, at the same place, we hold a memorial ceremony for one of the party’s funding fathers, democracy activist Fu Cheng,” Tsai said in her speech.

US Representative Dana Rohrabacher is threatening to end his strong legislative support for Taiwan as a result of Chunghwa Telecom’s (CHT, 中華電信) decision to terminate satellite services for “pro--democracy” channel New Tang Dynasty Television (新唐人電視台, NTDTV).

“If Taiwan does not support the struggle for freedom of thought within China, I see no need for America to support Taiwan,” Rohrabacher said in a letter sent on Wednesday to President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九).

Rohrabacher, a California Republican, has been one of the most ardent pro-Taiwan representatives in Washington.

The legislature’s caucus leaders, including the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), yesterday approved a non-binding resolution demanding that President Ma Ying-jeou’s (馬英九) administration lodge an official protest with China over its unilateral demarcation of an air defense identification zone (ADIZ) in the East China Sea.

The resolution asks Ma to file a stern protest against the Chinese demarcation, which it said has destabilized regional stability, and to take concerted action with the nation’s democratic allies by refusing to submit flight plans as Beijing has requested.
