DPP calls for Chen’s release or transfer

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmakers yesterday called for a release for medical treatment or a prison transfer for former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁), who has been suffering health problems during his incarceration.

Chen, who is serving a 17-and-a-half-year sentence for corruption, was granted a seven-day release from Taipei Prison between March 6 and Tuesday last week for a medical checkup. He was found to be suffering from acute coronary syndrome and underwent a cardiac catheterization.

Chen Shui-bian, former President of the Republic of China in-exile, is serving a lengthy sentence for corruption in Taiwan.  Revelations that Chen was drugged without his knowledge or consent by ROC authorities with a psychiatric medication while in prison have shaken Chen’s many supporters.

DHARAMSHALA, March 17: Details are finally emerging on the self-immolation protest that took place in Rebkong, eastern Tibet earlier today.

The 30th Tibetan to set his body on fire demanding the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama from exile and freedom in Tibet since 2009, has been identified as Sonam Dhargey, a 44-year-old farmer.

Taiwan has neither broken any WTO rules nor breached any commitments by failing to go ahead with a plan to establish maximum residue levels for the livestock feed additive ractopamine, of which the organization was first notified in 2007, a WTO official said.

Despite a good cross-strait relationship, Taiwan in the short run is anxious about the upcoming elections and in the long run is concerned about the respective rise and decline of China and the US’ influence on the country, said Brad Glosserman, the executive director of the Pacific Forum at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington-based think tank on foreign policy.

He added that all of Asia is beginning to worry that “the balance of power in the region is shifting in China’s favor.”

Glosserman said in his recent writings that while the possibility of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) coming to power again has some people worried, it does not mean that those who are worried favor the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT).
