KMT campaign turns desperate

During the previous presidential election campaign, the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) accused the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of playing “dirty tricks.” They published a list of 16 such “tricks,” and even sent it to the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT).

However, the DPP is a bit cleaner than the KMT, and never used any of the tricks on the list. Ironically, four years later, the KMT has reached a dead-end, and has itself resorted to using the top tricks on that list.

2012 ELECTIONS: DPP sues president and premier for corruption

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) filed a lawsuit against President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) and Premier Wu Den-yih (吳敦義) yesterday, accusing the two of corruption for favoring Performance Workshop Theatre founder Stan Lai (賴聲川) in organizing the ROC Centenary celebration events.

DPP spokesperson Chuang Ruei-hsiung (莊瑞雄) and Kang Yu-cheng (康裕成) filed the lawsuit at the Taipei Prosecutors’ Office in the afternoon, telling reporters that Ma and Wu had leaked secrets and favored Lai with public funds in their behind-the-scenes handling of a series of events organized by the ROC Centenary Foundation.

Swiss Foreign Ministry “very worried” over situation in Tibet

DHARAMSHALA, November 22: Senior government officials in Switzerland, including the Swiss Foreign Ministry have expressed concerns over the “desperate situation” inside Tibet following the spate of self-immolations by Tibetans in Tibet as well as in India and Nepal.

According to the official website of the Dharamshala based Central Tibetan Administration, the Swiss Foreign Ministry in a statement issued late Monday evening said that the self-immolations in Tibet and the desperation of the Tibetan people were “very worrying”.

Although it is too early to tell whether a telephone threat to Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairperson Tsai Ing-wen’s (蔡英文) presidential campaign office yesterday was the real deal, there are already indications that fear and intimidation could become an important ingredient in the January presidential election.

An unidentified man, who called twice, allegedly threatened to set Tsai’s office in Banciao (板橋), New Taipei City (新北市), ablaze. Tsai’s staff, who immediately called police, said it was the first time the office had received threatening calls.
