Taiwan, China firms charged over secrets

China challenged the US yesterday to show evidence to support charges that Beijing backed a scheme by Taiwanese and Chinese companies to steal trade secrets from a US-based semiconductor firm.

IOC asks Taiwan for clarification of name change referendum procedures

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) in a letter to the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee (CTOC) asked for information about Taiwanese referendum procedures ahead of a plebiscite on whether the nation should request to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as “Taiwan” instead of “Chinese Taipei,” the national Olympic committee said on Wednesday.

Premier Wu Den-yih (吳敦義) said yesterday the government would soon lift a ban on high-tech industries setting up operations in China, saying regulations for the review and approval of applications were still being deliberated on by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA).

“I recently had a briefing from the MOEA [on reviewing investment bans on China] and was in support of its suggestions [to ease restrictions], but we still need to work out a detailed plan, as well as rules for reviewing applications,” Wu said at a press conference mapping out his Cabinet’s policies for this year.
