Taiwan, US to deepen cooperation in education

Taiwan and the US on Monday reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in English and Mandarin-language education, with a view to expanding their collaboration to include the sciences.

Deputy Minister of Education Liu Mon-chi (劉孟奇) led a delegation of ministry officials to the fourth high-level dialogue under the Taiwan-US Education Initiative in Washington, the Ministry of Education said in a news release yesterday.

The ministry presented the outcome of bilateral cooperation in Mandarin and bilingual education; exchanges between elementary, junior-high schools and universities; and cultivation of semiconductor talent, it said.

Taiwan must learn from 228, Lai says

President-elect William Lai (賴清德) yesterday said he would work to safeguard the nation’s security and democracy to ensure freedom and economic prosperity, and that the tragic events of the 228 Incident “never happen in Taiwan again.”

The Incident refers to the indiscriminate killing of a person in a crowd on Feb. 27, 1947, and the gunning down by the then-Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) government of protesters at a resulting demonstration the next day. It was followed by a brutal crackdown. Estimates of the number of eventual deaths vary from 10,000 to more than 30,000.

The Incident was closely followed by the White Terror era in Taiwan.

Taiwan Association for the Care of the Victims of Political Persecution During the Martial Law Period secretary-general Tsai Kuan-yu (蔡寬裕) has called on the government to declassify important articles and reveal the methods that the military police used to extract confessions.

Tsai’s remarks came in the wake of a recent controversy caused by a military police visit to a civilian’s home over an alleged online sale of classified government documents.
