‘No support’ for referendum, AIT says

The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) yesterday said it does not support a referendum on Taiwanese independence, after a former AIT chairman penned an open letter advising against the proposed plebiscite by pro-independence group Formosa Alliance.

Flight turned back over Taiwan issue

An Air New Zealand flight on its way to Shanghai was forced to return to Auckland after several hours in the air on Saturday because paperwork for the flight included a reference to Taiwan, news Web site Stuff reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

Two leading student representatives of the Occupy Legislature Movement received a police guard on their way to address a mass sit-in Taipei yesterday.

Lin Fei-fan (林飛帆), a National Taiwan University graduate student and Chen Wei-ting (陳為廷), a graduate student at National Tsing Hua University, were guarded by plainclothes police when they took part in the rally in front of the Presidential Office Building in protest against a cross-strait service trade agreement with China, the Taipei City Police Department told a press briefing yesterday.
