DHARAMSHALA, June 15: In confirmed reports coming out of Tibet, Tamding Thar, a Tibetan in his 50s, set himself on fire in Amdo Chentsa region of Tibet in an apparent protest against the Chinese government today at around 6:30 am (local time).

Tamding Thar passed away in his fiery protest.

Speaking to Phayul, Ghangri, a monk in south India confirmed the reports.

Prison harming Chen: experts

The conditions of former president Chen Shui-bian’s (陳水扁) confinement in prison are “unacceptable” and have affected his physical as well as mental health, US-based medical experts said yesterday.

Joseph Lin, Ken Yoneda and Charles Whitcomb, professors at the University of California at Davis, told the Taipei Times that Chen’s health and the conditions of his confinement were “disturbing” and an issue of human rights and humanitarianism.

State Public Prosecutor-General Chen Tsung-ming (陳聰明) tendered his resignation yesterday after being impeached by the Control Yuan.

The government watchdog impeached the top prosecutor by a vote of 8-3, citing concerns over his “integrity” and “sincerity” in leading the Special Investigation Panel’s investigation into alleged corruption involving former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁).
