Academics slam curricula changes

The proposal by the Ministry of Education that high-school curriculum guidelines should say that the right to self-determination of people under colonial rule is restricted is aimed at depriving Taiwanese of their right to determine the future of their own country, while downplaying the White Terror era is an attempt to legitimize authoritarian rule, academics said yesterday.

Amid strong criticism, the ministry announced the full versions of adjustments to be made to the history, civic and social studies, Chinese language and geography curricula on Monday night.

Taiwan Nation Alliance planning 228 parade

The Taiwan Nation Alliance is planning a parade in Taipei on Feb. 28 to mark the 67th anniversary of the 228 Incident.

The parade theme will be “Remembrance of the national trauma of the 228 Incident, build a new nation — Taiwan,” alliance convener Yao Chia-wen (姚嘉文) said.

A few weeks before US President Barack Obama embarks on a trip to China, Democratic Congressman Robert Andrews has introduced a resolution on Capitol Hill “expressing the sense of Congress regarding the freedom, security and stability of Taiwan.”

It is aimed at pressuring Obama to stand up for Taiwan when the issue is raised — as it surely will be — at his meetings with President Hu Jintao (胡錦濤) in Beijing.
