Tsai Ing-wen visits frigate, vows that the nation will safeguard its interests

President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) yesterday vowed to demonstrate the nation’s determination to safeguard its national interests as she boarded a Kang Ding-class frigate at the naval port in Kaohsiung’s Zuoying District (左營) ahead of its mission in the disputed South China Sea.

Taiwan yesterday refused to accept a ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, Netherlands,which included a statement that Taiwan-controlled Itu Aba Island (Taiping Island, 太平島) in the Spratly Islands (Nansha Islands, 南沙群島) is a “rock,” saying the verdict has severely infringed on Taiwan’s rights over the South China Sea island and its surrounding waters.

Several National Taiwan University professors yesterday criticized the government’s efforts to crack down on food safety violations, saying that the snowballing recycled waste oil scandal highlights a lack of inter-ministerial cooperation and the ineffectiveness of the food safety management system.

Their remarks came one day after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released the results of laboratory tests that found the edible lard oil manufactured by Greater Kaohsiung-based Chang Guann Co (強冠企業), which included recycled waste oil collected from restaurant fryers, met legal standards.
