Poll highlights fears of ECFA with China

A majority of respondents in a poll released by Taiwan Thinktank yesterday agreed that the government should slow the pace of signing an economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA) with China and postpone next week’s fourth round of high-level cross-strait talks before a higher degree of public consensus is reached.

The survey showed that 62.5 percent of respondents agreed that “the December [5] election results showed that many people in Taiwan still have doubts about an EFCA plan and thus the [President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九)] administration should put off signing the deal with China and rather seek consensus within the country.”

PRC charges activist with subversion

Leading Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo (劉曉波) has been formally indicted for subversion, his family and a rights group said yesterday, one year after he was detained in the wake of signing a pro-­democracy charter.

“His lawyer told me Friday that Liu Xiaobo has been formally charged with inciting subversion of state power,” his wife Liu Xia (劉霞) said.

Taiwan’s indigenously developed Medigen COVID-19 vaccine is as effective in preventing deaths and serious symptoms as mRNA shots, a study to be published in the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s journal next month showed.

An early release of the study is available on the Web site of the Emerging Infectious Diseases journal.

The study, conducted by the Centers for Disease and Control (CDC), utilized data from Taiwan’s records of inoculations, hospitalizations and deaths since the local outbreak of the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 in 2022.
