Chinese officials warn of possible new flu outbreaks

China is warning officials to brace for a possible new wave of swine flu infections as the country enters the busy Lunar New Year travel period.

Tens of millions of Chinese take to the rails, roads and air during the most important holiday of the traditional calendar, creating crowded conditions ideal for the spread of the virus. The holiday period this year runs from late January into February.

AIT complex freed from regulations

The Executive Yuan recently agreed that the new American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) compound in Taipei City’s Neihu District (內湖) would be regarded as a “special building,” exempting the project from some construction-related regulations except for rules concerning environmental issues.

Cases approved in line with the Principles Governing the Ministry of the Interior’s Deliberation of Applications for Special ­Buildings (內政部審議特種建築物申請案處理原則) allow buildings related to national security, or “special use” buildings, to be granted preferential treatment.

The Cabinet would dissolve a multibillion-dollar contract to build minesweeper ships with financially troubled Ching Fu Shipbuilding Co (慶富造船) if necessary, Premier William Lai (賴清德) told lawmakers yesterday.
