DPP wins all three seats in by-elections

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) scored a landmark election success yesterday, sweeping all three seats in legislative by-elections in Taoyuan, Taichung and Taitung counties.

The victory in Taitung marked the first time the party won a legislative seat in the county.

Former president Chen Shui-bian’s (陳水扁) appeal against his conviction on embezzlement and money laundering charges began yesterday at the Taiwan High Court.

Former first lady Wu Shu-jen (吳淑珍) did not appear in court, citing ill health.

More than 200,000 people, according to organizetrs’ estimates, took to the streets yesterday to join independent Taipei mayoral candidate Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) in a carnival-themed campaign parade, voicing their support for Ko’s “campaign for a change.”
