Dissidents warn ‘Beijing Model’ could harm Taiwan

Chinese dissidents yesterday expressed concern that a “Beijing Model” is being duplicated in Taiwan in which economic advance is being promoted at all costs.

“There is this new term, the ‘China model’ or ‘Beijing model,’ which is to promote economics regardless of the cost, and such a view is gradually being voiced in Taiwan,” Chinese democracy activist Wang Dan (王丹) told a forum in Taipei hosted by the Taiwan Society yesterday.

Fewer foreign residents in Taiwan last year: MOI

The number of foreign residents in the country declined last year, mainly because of a drop in the number of foreign workers in the manufacturing sector, the Ministry of the Interior said on Friday.

Ministry statistics showed that there were 552,792 foreign residents in Taiwan at the end of last year, down 6,508 from the previous year.

More than 200 people from more 20 civic groups and lawmakers marched through downtown Taipei yesterday in a call to free Tibet and uphold human rights.

The march was to commemorate Tibetan Uprising Day — the March 10 anniversary of a failed 1959 uprising against Chinese rule — which sparked a sharp crackdown and led to the Dalai Lama’s exile.
