US senator pressing for sale of F-16s to Taiwan By William Lowther

US Senator John Cornyn is calling on US President Barack Obama to immediately sell 66 advanced F-16C/D fighter planes to Taiwan.

“It would send a powerful message that the US will stand by our allies, both in the Taiwan Strait and in other parts of the world,” the Texan Republican said.

Former diplomat skeptical about benefits of an ECFA

Former diplomat and trade expert Benjamin Lu (魯肇忠) is calling on the Ma administration to clearly explain and reveal all details of a proposed economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA) with China before developing the pact any further with Beijing.

“People in Taiwan are very much concerned about an ECFA, but strangely the government is keeping them in the dark,” he said during an interview in Washington, where he is currently visiting family.

Acting on the president’s instructions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has again denied a visa to Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, who had been invited by an international group to attend its annual regional conference in Taipei next month, sparking outrage among various organizations in the country.

The Dalai Lama “is welcome to travel to Taiwan in due course. However, we need to arrange a more opportune time for his visit,” Minister of Foreign Affairs David Lin (林永樂) said in a letter, dated Friday last week, to Freda Miriklis, international president of the International Federation of Business and Professional Women (BPW International), the non-governmental organization behind the event.
