KMT blocks ECFA referendum bill

The Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT)-controlled legislature yesterday blocked an opposition-sponsored bill calling for a referendum on a proposed economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA) with China.

The bill — which would also have created a legislative ECFA monitoring team — was rejected by the Procedure Committee, marking the sixth time the proposal has been blocked.

ECFA rally scheduled for June 6

Protesters against the government's plan to sign an economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA) with China are planning to take their opposition to the streets on June 6.

Michelle Wang (王美琇), an official with the Taiwan Rescue Action Alliance and one of the organizers of the planned demonstration, said yesterday that they wanted the international community to know that not all Taiwanese support the trade pact and that “the people are fed up” with the government's continued push to sign it.

Democratic Progressive Party Taipei City councilors were furious yesterday at the Taipei 228 Memorial Museum because a painting of great historic significance by Taiwanese artist Lan Yin-ting (藍蔭鼎) was hidden in an archive and folded in half.

Taipei City Councilor Chien Yu-yen (簡余晏) said this shows that the 228 Memorial Museum is handling the nation’s valuable cultural treasures in a roughshod manner.
