FAPA gets Apple to change status of Taiwan on Web site

Following a protest from the Formosan Association for Public Affairs (FAPA), Apple Inc has stopped referring to Taiwan as a province of China on its Web site.

Instead, Taiwan is now listed as a separate country along with more than 20 others ranging from Australia to the US.

Dapu farmland owner’s funeral draws over 1,000

Over 1,000 people from more than 10 farming and human rights advocacy groups across the country attended the funeral of 72-year-old Chu Feng Min (朱馮敏), who allegedly committed suicide earlier this month to protest land seizures by the government.

Chu Feng, a native of Dapu Bourough (大埔), Jhunan Township (竹南), Miaoli County, was found dead on a chair on the porch of her house after swallowing a bottle of insecticide without leaving a suicide note behind on the morning of Aug. 3.

The Internet security firm Mandiant suspects that the white 12-story building photographed yesterday in a northern suburb of Shanghai, China, is the home of a People’s Liberation Army-led hacking group.

China’s army controls hundreds if not thousands of virulent and cutting-edge hackers, according to a report issued yesterday by a US Internet security firm that traced a host of cyberattacks to an anonymous building in Shanghai.

Mandiant said its hundreds of investigations showed that groups hacking into US newspapers, government agencies, and companies “are based primarily in China and that the Chinese government is aware of them.”
