DPP suing KMT quartet over shooting comments

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) yesterday said it would file lawsuits against a group of politicians over allegations that the party condoned a shooting last month.

Aimed at Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) lawmakers, the lawsuits were the first court challenges to be filed following the incident, in which Sean Lien (連勝文), a KMT Central Committee member and son of former KMT chairman Lien Chan (連戰), was shot on Nov. 26.

Chen Shui-bian now prisoner No. 1020

Former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) will now be identified by his personal identification number, 1020, as he began serving his prison sentence at Taipei Prison on Thursday after being convicted on corruption charges.

Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Chen Ting-fei (陳亭妃) visited Chen Shui-bian yesterday morning and said she was shocked when to see the former president with his head shaved in accordance with prison regulations for inmates.

The “dangerous game” of keeping imprisoned former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) from access to appropriate medical care has been played for “too long and too far,” former US attorney-general Ramsey Clark said yesterday in Taipei, calling for Chen’s immediate release and international attention to his situation.

Clark, who is in Taiwan on a four-day visit, told a press conference yesterday evening that Taiwanese need to exercise their power and make their support of Chen heard, while the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva should pay attention to Chen’s case and do its duty.
