Letter calls for Taiwan’s UN inclusion

Global organizations representing Taiwanese communities overseas on Friday wrote a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calling for Taiwan’s inclusion in the UN as a full member under that name.

The letter, which underscored Taiwan’s democratic form of government and contributions to the world during the COVID-19 pandemic, was cosigned by the US-based Formosan Association for Public Affairs (FAPA) and nine other groups in North America and Europe.

Tuvalu vows to ‘stand firm’ with Taiwan: Natano

Visiting Tuvaluan Prime Minister Kausea Natano yesterday said his country would “stand firm to remain a lasting and loyal ally” of Taiwan.

Natano made the pledge at a ceremony in Taipei marking his first visit to Taiwan as prime minister since taking office in 2019.

Department of Health Minister Yaung Chih-liang (楊志良) tendered his resignation in a shock move yesterday, saying he could not fulfill Premier Wu Den-yih’s (吳敦義) request that 75 percent of the insured be exempted from a proposal to increase national health insurance premiums.

Wu rejected Yaung’s resignation late last night, however. Executive Yuan spokesman Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) said the premier hoped Yaung would stay in the position.
