Professors express concerns over the online cross-strait language database

A group of language professors expressed concern yesterday that a new language database shared by Taiwan and China is part of an effort by President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) to push for unification with China and called for more attention to other languages spoken in Taiwan.

Ma on Wednesday applauded the launch of the online Chinese Language Knowledge Database (中華語文知識庫), a database of the way Mandarin is used differently in Taiwan and China.

Fire continues to burn in Tibet: A teenage nun self-immolates

DHARAMSHALA, February 11: In confirmed reports coming out of Tibet, a teenage Tibetan nun set her body on fire raising slogans against the Chinese government in Ngaba, eastern Tibet today.

The exile base of Kirti monastery in Dharamshala, in a release today identified the nun as Tenzin Choedron, 18, from the Mamae Dechen Choekhorling nunnery.

A nuclear-propelled US submarine has arrived in South Korea in the second deployment of a major US naval asset to the Korean Peninsula this month, South Korea’s military said yesterday, adding to the allies’ show of force to counter North Korean nuclear threats.

The USS Annapolis arrived at a port on Jeju Island about a week after the USS Kentucky docked at the mainland port of Busan.

The Kentucky was the first US nuclear-armed submarine to visit South Korea since the 1980s. North Korea reacted to its arrival by test-firing ballistic and cruise missiles in apparent demonstrations that it could make nuclear strikes against South Korea and deployed US naval vessels.
