Lawyers ask for Longtan case retrial

Lawyers representing former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) appealed to the High Court for a retrial of the Longtan case on the grounds that Tsai Ming-che (蔡銘哲) was a “tainted witness” after admitting withholding information from his testimony.

Chen is serving a 17-and-a-half-year sentence on charges of corruption.

China hampers trade talks: EU official

China has been the main obstacle preventing the EU from opening negotiations with Taiwan over a deal on trade facilitation, despite “overwhelming backing” in the European parliament for the bid, a visiting member of the European Parliament said yesterday.

The European Parliament as a whole is very supportive of the EU signing a free-trade agreement or an economic cooperation agreement with Taiwan and wants to see negotiations start as soon as possible, said Martin Callanan, chairman of the European Conservatives and Reformists group in the parliament.

DHARAMSHALA, March 5: In alarming news coming out of Tibet, another Tibetan died today after setting himself on fire protesting China’s occupation of Tibet.

This is the third self-immolation in as many days.

Dorjee, 18, a native of Cha Shang in the beleaguered Ngaba region of eastern Tibet set himself on fire at around 6.30 pm local time today.
