Teenage Tibetan in self-immolation protest: Xinhua

DHARAMSHALA, November 10: A teenaged Tibetan man passed away in his self-immolation protest in eastern Tibet on Saturday, AFP said citing China’s state news agency Xinhua.

The 18-year-old became the seventh Tibetan to set himself on fire in the last four days, making this the deadliest week since the wave of self-immolation protests began in 2009.

Now, 70 Tibetans have set themselves ablaze, protesting China’s continued occupation of Tibet and demanding the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and freedom in Tibet.

Taiwan cool to China’s unification call

The Mainland Affairs Council yesterday reiterated President Ma Ying-jeou’s (馬英九) “three noes” policy — no unification, no independence and no use of force — in response to China’s call for both sides of the Taiwan Strait to negotiate and sign a peace agreement.

Speaking at the opening of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) 18th National Congress in Beijing yesterday, Chinese President Hu Jintao (胡錦濤) also warned Taiwan against any moves toward independence and said that China would stick to the principle of “peaceful unification” with Taiwan under the “one country, two systems” model.
