NPP only ‘third force’ likely to win seats: poll

The New Power Party (NPP) is the only “third force” party likely to be awarded at-large legislative seats, according to a new poll released yesterday by the Taiwan Thinktank, which also showed that a large majority of the party’s supporters come from the “pan-green” camp.

The poll results show that the NPP has a support rating of 5.6 percent for voters’ at-large legislative seat ballot, compared with 4.3 percent for the People First Party (PFP), 3.7 percent for the Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU), 2.3 percent for the Green Party-Social Democratic Party Alliance (Green Party-SDP Alliance), 1.6 percent for the Free Taiwan Party and 0.7 percent for the Republic Party (Minkuotang, MKT).

Tsai vows to issue apology to Aborigines

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) yesterday said that, if elected in January’s presidential election, she would issue an official apology to the Aborigines on behalf of the government.

She added that she would also push forward reforms of Aboriginal policies on the basis of “equality, dignity and autonomy.”

DHARAMSHALA, February 4: Even as China is receiving widespread condemnation for its sentencing of eight Tibetans over “crimes” related to self-immolations, reports have come in of another arrest in connection with the ongoing wave of fiery protests.

Continuing its crackdown on relatives of self-immolators, Chinese authorities in Rebkong region of eastern Tibet detained an uncle of Dorjee Lhundup, a Tibetan farmer who set himself on fire in protest against Chinese rule in November last.
