Taiwan built sub to be tested from September

A prototype of Taiwan’s first locally built submarine is set to begin testing in September, marking a milestone in the nation’s Indigenous Defense Submarine program, CSBC Corp, Taiwan (台船) chairman Cheng Wen-lon (鄭文隆) said yesterday.

The construction of the prototype has continued around the clock after overcoming a series of difficulties thanks to the cooperation of the Naval Shipbuilding Development Center, the navy’s 256th Submarine Squadron and a CSBC task force, Cheng said.

TSMC to invest US$60bn in Tainan

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC, 台積電) yesterday said that it plans to invest more than NT$1.86 trillion (US$60.5 billion) on an advanced factory in Tainan to expand 3-nanometer chip capacity, after its plans to produce chips in the US triggered concerns at home over technology outflow and talent drain.

The world’s biggest contract chipmaker in 2018 said that it plans to spend NT$700 billion on a “giga-fab” in Tainan, dubbed Fab 18, to produce 5-nanometer chips, and establish a research and development (R&D) team. The company at the time said that it would reserve half of the facility’s space for the production of 3-nanometer chips.

A group of pro-localization organizations yesterday called on the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to nominate the strongest candidate for the pan-green camp for this year’s Taipei mayoral election, possibly suggesting they support independent aspirant Ko Wen-je (柯文哲), who has been leading the pan-green camp hopefuls in several public opinion poll conducted by media outlets.

At a press conference held in Taipei yesterday, Taiwan Society President Chang Yen-hsien (張炎憲) said the DPP has been following party regulations which stipulate that an aspirant has to be a party member before they can be recruited by the party to run in the election.
