DHARAMSHALA, June 29: A Tibetan girl in her teens is being described in “critical” condition after she was severely beaten and arrested for carrying out a lone protest against China’s continued occupation of Tibet.
According to reports Jigme Dolma, 17, took out her protest in Kardze region of eastern Tibet on June 24.
Exile news sources are reporting that Dolma raised pro-Tibet slogans calling for Tibet’s freedom and the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, demands which have been raised by more than 40 Tibetans who have set themselves on fire in recent times.
Dolma was later traced to a local government hospital in a “critical” condition as described by her relatives.
Although the present well-being and whereabouts of Dolma is not known, it is believed that she has sustained major damages to her arms and legs as a result of the severe police beatings.
In another report, a Tibetan man arrested by the Chinese police in Serthar, eastern Tibet this February is still being held incommunicado in a prison in Dartsedo.
The Central Tibetan Administration yesterday said that Chinese authorities have neither framed any charges nor made any verdict against Tsultrim, 40.
Authorities have further barred all visitors from seeing him.
Tsultrim’s arrest is believed to be linked with the peaceful demonstration by Tibetans in Serthar earlier this year.
On January 24, a large crowd of Tibetans gathered in the central town of Serthar and started raising slogans calling for Tibet’s independence.
Over 600 Chinese security personnel arrived at the scene of the protests and began firing indiscriminately at the crowd. Sources in exile have said that at least five Tibetans suffered fatal bullet injuries while over 40 Tibetans were seriously injured.
Tsultrim is a native of Ngaba region. He has a wife and a one and half year old child.
